What I can offer as a mentor
I'm happy to speak with early career journalists about business and tech journalism
Biography
I'm a senior editor helping to drive editorial strategy for Business Insider's tech coverage, bridging the gap between tech and high-impact journalism.
I used to be a software engineer, but my passion for journalism led me to take a leap back into it as an enterprise tech and cloud reporter at Business Insider. Today, I help lead its tech and AI coverage, managing a team of reporters who track the competitive landscape and societal impact of giants like Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia.
As a reporter, I've broken scoops at Big Tech companies and delved into a wide array of topics, like the open source licensing wars, the rise and fall of various developer startups, coding bootcamps investigated by the state of California, and sexual harassment in tech. In 2022, the Big Tech team needed an editor, and I raised my hand.
My scoops and investigative work have been highly recognized. I received the San Francisco Press Club Award for Continuous Reporting for my stories on sexism and sexual harassment in Silicon Slopes, and the Asian American Journalists Association's Excellence in Business / Consumer / Tech Reporting Award for my investigation into the coding boot camp Holberton School. In 2024, I was recognized as a Xana Fellow by SABEW. Most recently, I was an editor on a Business Insider team investigation into the environmental and economic impacts of AI data centers, which won the George Polk Award and an honorable mention through SABEW.
Background:
I hold a BS in Journalism and Computer Science and a Master of Science in Law (MSL) from Northwestern University, where I took fascinating courses on venture capital, technology standards, and privacy. My work has previously appeared in TIME, the Huffington Post, VICE, Pacific Standard, Inverse, Chicago magazine, the Chicago Reporter, and more. My writing has been anthologized in the books "No Planet B" (Haymarket Books and Teen Vogue) and "Whiter: Asian American Women on Skin Color and Colorism" (NYU Press).
Outside work, I'm an avid trail runner and practice martial arts, as I enjoy the mental challenge and focus required of both activities.
